Learn about SNAP benefits
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is one of the largest federal assistance programs. Targeted to low-income households, its main objective is to provide resources to purchase food for a defined period of time. This is done by issuing an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to the beneficiary:
- Automatic transfer of money each month.
- Access to a network of retailers to purchase food or withdraw cash.
- Spending control through the EBT card, similar to a debit card.
Online shopping with SNAP benefits
Since 2014, Public Law 113-79 has established a pilot program to evaluate the use of SNAP benefits in online shopping. With important security and privacy precautions, in 2016 retailers were invited to voluntarily participate. Today, more than 200 food retailers and 4 million monthly customers benefit from this initiative, which is available in 50 states and the District of Columbia.
To shop online with SNAP benefits, the USDA offers a dedicated page where you can check which stores participate in the program in your state. However, it is important to remember that not all shipping fees may be covered and that only certain categories of foods are approved, such as bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, dairy, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.
In addition, categories such as beer, wine, any alcoholic beverages, tobacco or similar, as well as vitamins, medications, live animals, pet food, or cleaning and hygiene items are not allowed.
Where to shop online with SNAP benefits
The USDA provides a list of stores participating in the online shopping program for SNAP benefits in each state. However, it is advisable to always check if a brand that allows SNAP shopping in one state also offers this option in other states. Here are the top 20 stores participating in the program.
