The program is available to households affected by natural disasters that have suffered losses or damage related to the event
The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) provides temporary food assistance to low-income households facing losses following a natural disaster. Unlike the traditional SNAP program, D-SNAP is designed for those who do not normally qualify for food assistance, but who have incurred disaster-related expenses.
According to the official government website, “D-SNAP provides funds on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to pay for food.” In addition, “even if you do not normally receive or do not qualify for SNAP, you may qualify for D-SNAP.” This program is only available in states with a President’s Individual Assistance statement.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for D-SNAP, applicants must have faced disaster-related expenses such as:
- Repair of a home or business.
- Relocation or temporary housing expenses.
- Evacuation costs.
- Personal injury or funeral expenses.
- Loss of food due to flooding or prolonged power outages.
In addition, loss of income or inability to access income as a result of loss of employment or reduction in wages is also considered for eligibility.
Supplemental Benefits for SNAP Households
Households already receiving SNAP may apply for additional benefits if their income has been affected or if their current benefits are less than the maximum amount allowed for their household size. These supplements are designed to increase benefits up to the maximum amount, ensuring parity between D-SNAP households and regular SNAP recipients.
Food Replacement
Current SNAP recipients may also apply for replacement benefits for any food purchased with SNAP that was lost due to the disaster. To do so, it is necessary to contact the local SNAP office and provide the necessary details to process the application.
