The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, is a federal initiative that provides support to low-income families for the purchase of healthy foods. While it is overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, each state adapts its implementation; in Texas, this task falls under Texas Health and Human Services.

In the state, beneficiaries receive their monthly payments via the Lone Star Card, a type of Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) that functions like a debit card. These funds can be used to purchase essential foods such as fruits, vegetables, proteins, and carbohydrates, but cannot be used to buy products like alcohol, tobacco, or non-food-related services.

Who can access the program?

SNAP is available to low-income households, unemployed individuals, and certain specific cases, such as pregnant women or individuals with disabilities. However, people aged 18 to 52 must meet additional conditions, such as actively seeking employment. The income limits vary depending on household size, with a monthly cap of $2,005 for one person and $4,832 for families of five members. For each additional member, $707 is added to the limit.
