The uncertain future of SNAP benefits under the possible presidency of Donald Trump

Although Trump has been ambiguous in his statements, it is speculated that he will implement significant changes in assistance programs

During the electoral campaign, Donald Trump was asked about the future of SNAP benefits, a vital program in the United States that helps low-income families access essential food. Although his response was ambiguous, speculations suggest that his administration could carry out modifications to this system.

One of the main points of discussion has been Project 2025, an initiative designed by The Heritage Foundation, an influential think tank close to Trump. This plan aims to reduce the state budget in various areas, in order to redistribute those resources to other priorities. Although Trump denied having prior knowledge of this project, his relationship with the foundation is well known. The project seeks to save up to 5.5 billion dollars over five years, and it is anticipated that the beneficiaries of SNAP benefits would be the most affected by these cuts.

While the fate of SNAP vouchers is uncertain, it may come to pass that Trump’s policies could include changes such as:

  1. Eligibility Restrictions: In his previous administration, Trump tried to modify the eligibility requirements for programs like SNAP, seeking to reduce the number of beneficiaries.
  2. Funding Cuts: With a focus on reducing public spending, cuts in the funding of programs like SNAP could translate into fewer resources being available to beneficiaries.
  3. Increased Supervision and Restrictions: It is possible that new measures of supervision will be implemented to more strictly control the use of assistance benefits.
  4. Transfer of Responsibility to the States: A common approach of the Republican Party is to delegate the management of these programs to the states, which could result in disparities in the availability and quality of benefits depending on the state.

On the other hand, Trump also addressed his stance on Social Security and Medicare. In a recent interview with Breitbart News, he reaffirmed his commitment to the beneficiaries of these programs, stating that he has no plans to modify the pension system or make changes that could harm Medicare or Social Security users. «I will never do anything that jeopardizes or harms Social Security or Medicare,» he said.

However,  although Trump has promised to protect these programs, there could be adjustments in certain aspects. The combination of his focus on budget cuts and his desire to decentralize federal programs could change the landscape for many social assistance beneficiaries in the United States.
